Valerian and the bla bla
« on: July 21, 2017, 03:50:30 PM »
I saw Valerian today. It s a masterpiece for scifi lovers. A film by Luc Besson. Worth every penny.

It is a movie in the fashion of the Fifth Element. Of course there are runnings and shootings but the movie has enough panoramic scenes so my eyes weren t tired during this movie.

The conclusion of the movie - love always wins - is not new nor surprising. But the way Lorelai tells it is in her prefinal speech is worth it. It s worth seeing the entire movie just for those few sentences.

time to sleeep. I recommend this movie.

Interesting, I heard the movie was a bit of a mess.

I was suggesting that if you're wearing a shirt tight enough that they can be seen, you're already enough of a slut to show your ankles.

Interesting, I heard the movie was a bit of a mess.

It was never not going to be. It is not a cerebral movie.

Its actually more cerebral than it looks on the surface. Its very damn good sci-fi and at its core is a story about moral choices.

Honestly, the reason people say its a mess seems to be because they don't understand the story structure. Its an odyssey, which means a sequence of events following one another that are largely independent of each other within the main plot. Its not messy, its literally the oldest plot in the books, and one that's much more rarely used in modern story-telling.

Also, the idea I saw in reviews that the plot was convoluted is laughably wrong. Its not a new or super original plot, at its core, and frankly, anyone who consumes fiction should be able to put the basics together on their own before the film's halfway point. Its simply not spelled out for the audience as it goes along, leaving you to piece the last bits together BEFORE its expositioned in the climax.

What I have heard, have not seen the film, is that its gorgeous to look at thru and thru, the first five minutes are fucking epic genius, the rest of the film is a mess. Cara Delvingne and Rhianna play to this well but the male lead is shit and just to young to play this part. This also has John Goodman and if don't give bonus points for that what are we even doing here people?

FTR, John Goodman's voice acting is good, but a small part. It actually almost jarred me out of the movie, and would have been disappointing to run into again later on.

But as I said, I think people fail to understand the story structure. Its a series of vignettes in sequence where the characters are passing through and end up doing things PURELY to get through to the next thing. These things don't contribute to the main storyline, but that's sort of the point. Its literally about the journey not just the destination. Its literally like the Odyssey.

...actually, now I think on it, it might actually map relatively well to the actual Odyssey. I'mma have to check on this.

I will say the two leads were by far the weakest part of the movie, but...it actually did not bother me that much. Especially since the leading contribution to that isn't their fault. Besson really needs someone to write with him purely to touch up his dialogue issues. The man cannot turn a phrase or quip with any consistency.

Cromstar I would say that most odysseys are not super well received. Especially not sci-fi ones. I think Cloud Atlas would be a great example although they also had to throw in the whole time shift, repeating lives/actors aspect.

"Hermione is canonically black"

wat?

JK Rowling implied that Hermoine was written as a black character (likely because it was a flavor-of-the-month thing to do socially), despite her books explicitly describing her as white.

It's a stupid argument all around though.

Watched the movie today and  I thought it was decent and a good time killer.  The male lead kinda sucked but the the female makes up for it.  I'm glad they didn't make the ending like Avatar and didn't have them stuck in with the natives.
