Connection time out issues
« on: April 21, 2017, 09:57:43 AM »
So for the past couple of weeks, I've been having connection time-out issues which prevents me from loading pages(I use firefox; switching browsers doesn't help); the only thing that works is Youtube and facebook.  The rest of the pages usually get a connection time out error page.  Funny thing is it usually only happens between ~530PM to 930PM.  Same problem also exists on my other devices that are hooked to the wifi; they can't load any web pages and only FB updates while the Smart TV doesn't want netflix to work.  I'm the only person on my wifi network and I don't have any data sucking devices running contently during this time.  I'm curious to know if y'all think it's an issue with the service provider or if its something I can fix myself.

You prob share a trunk with your neighbors who all come home and get on the net between 1700 and 2100.

Might want to check your active users on your router when you have the problem in case someone figured out your wifi password. But, assuming "I'm the only person" means you already checked that, it's most likely your service provider. Do you know how to access your modem's status screen? Mine is at 192.168.100.1 but yours might differ.

What make & model modem do you have, and, on the Signal tab, what are its downstream power levels? Mainly while you're having the problem but wouldn't hurt to know them when you're good, too.

Does resetting your router fix the issue when it happens?

That is kinda fishy that only fb and youtube work btw. Both utilize SSL/HTTPS, I'm not sure if that matters though.

If you haven't already, run a virus scan, and also a malware scan using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. See if anything comes up.

Check your DNS settings too. Instead of using upstream change to Google or OpenDNS.

Jesus, it's probably just a signal thing. I've had internet problems for yahears and what he's describing sounds like when it was a signal problem.

If he can access facebook and youtube, but other sites remain inaccessible, I highly doubt that is bad signal.

Does being plugged into your router solve this issue on one of these devices that has trouble connecting? Just so we know if it might be your router's signal during that time.

Thanks for the help.  I ran a scan using that malware software suggested along with AVG and nothing was found.  I'll go ahead and try the other suggestions next time it happens.

Router is a CBN CH7466CE, the base model provided by the local cable company.   Also, I initially tried resetting, but it didn't help.

Are you renting your router from the cable company? If so there's your issue. They basically keep the same used up routers and keep renting them out at what seems like a great deal but the routers are way past their usage date. Honestly buying a pretty decent router for 50-$100 is a much better deal since they last you up to a year or two before they start to have noticeable slower speeds. Also most cable companies rent out routers out at like $10 a month right so if you think about it a $100 router pays for itself in 10 months.

But your router completely not working for a few hours is a possible non router issue as well so try what we suggested before looking for a new router.

Have you tried adjusting DNS settings?

Also, you're probably paying a $5/month rental fee on that router. Like TUGT I would recommend... not doing that.

$42 refurbished.  Most cable fees are around $10 / month, that's a quick payback.

Or get a new one for $60-
ARRIS SURFboard SB6141 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem - Retail Packaging - White https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AJHDZSI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Jg3-yb1DRGHMY

Throw in a modest router:
Linksys AC1200 Wi-Fi Wireless Dual-Band+ Router, Smart Wi-Fi App Enabled to Control Your Network from Anywhere (EA6100) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JZWQTKO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_1i3-ybR0HQETQ

And you're good to go.

---

Check your DNS settings at the router level though.

An additional possibility is wireless interference. How densely populated is your area ?

Old router would not explain the connectivity issues at rush hours, though. I suggest wireshark.

Honestly you really can't go wrong as long as you checkout some reviews and don't fucking rent a router from your cable company. They purposely give you shit so they can charge you again to come replace a router or look at it. It's also very fucking easy to set up a router incase you consider having them set up a new one.

Indeed. We could instruct him on how to redirect all their traffic to porn sites or malware providers. That might be a bit above his technical abilities though.

That's a DOCSIS 3.0 modem, so it should be fine unless it's damaged. Can you reach its status page and tell us your signal power levels, both when you're not and when you are having the problem?

I've been having an issue with "page not found" on this site lately.  I honestly haven't paid attention whether it's just home or also at work, but I just assumed it's because satellite sucks at home.

Thanks for the help.
Any luck?

So I didn't have any issues this week;I did add some add-ons for Firefox, ghost something or other and a proxy thing but I don't think they had anything to do with fixing the issues.  I'm thinking right now it may be something with the service provider since other people in my general region have been having issues here and there as well.  Thanks again for all the help; I'll report back if it happens again.
