4th book in a series on HYW. Most detailed history of the war I'm aware of which has grown to 3500-4000 pages in total.
(click to show/hide)

"I do not want to miss a good chance of getting us a slice of this magnificent African cake."

"Evangelize the n------ so that they stay forever in submission to the white colonialists, so they never revolt against the restraints they are undergoing. Recite every day - "happy are those who are weeping because the kingdom of God is for them." Convert always the blacks by using the whip. Keep their women in nine months of submission to work freely for us."

Timothy Zahn is back and as good as ever. Read it cover to cover in 3 days, with the origin story fans of the character have always wanted.

That's next on my list as soon as I finish this Ahsoka book that I've been dragging along for no other reason than I never think to read it.
I like when Pfeiffer posts the same thing he's previously posted, expecting us to be like "wow Pfeiffer! You're so right! We should've listened to you darn us SHAME SHAME SHAME!!"

Read that book 3 years ago -- It was assigned reading in a law class I was enrolled in.

It's alright, don't worry you're not on a watchlist, it's pretty normie-core. I'd give it a 7.6/10
Figuring people out is what I do, and I gave up trying to understand syrup a long time ago.

Mostly about the Ilkhanate to Temur which doesn't have a lot written about in English so this book is exciting to me.

It's a solid book on the various revolutions in military affairs from the 15th century on have impacted the world and why certain countries were able to take advantage of them compared to others.  It's a pretty easy read too.

Been reading a lot of project/time-management books lately. I've got my schedule down to a goddamn science.

Let me know if you want any recommendations because 90% of these types of books are shit, imo. (I've read around 11 of them now [bus commute + work-library] and only 2-3 were worthwhile depending on the person)

So, I played through a game of Alpha Centauri the other day (on easy, just wanted the flavor) and it got me to thinking about the lore and, in-turn, the books.

I found a website called OpenLibrary where I can read it online for free.

So far, it's okay. Kind of a small story focusing on an early conflict between the Spartans and Peacekeepers but it's the first of three books, so I suppose the small scale makes sense. I appreciate how the writer has managed to insert concepts from the in-game universe into his writing without being obtrusive but the characters are coming off a bit flat, especially Santiago.

Still, interesting to hear how the canonical story plays out.

I think we may have a different opinion on what retardation is.

To answer a question that came up some time ago:

Nerve stapling is basically exactly what it sounds like. Large staples in the skin with filaments attaching the ends to the nerves and stimulate pain receptors, resulting in continual, debilitating agony. It is not a process that needs to be managed; they can just be tied to the bed, nerve stapled and left there to suffer indefinitely.

I would note, however, that there seems to be some inconsistency between the technology in the books vs the game. The part I'm at is just about 100 years from planetfall, so it might simply not have developed to the point referred to during one of the interludes. But, iirc, it's one week every 40 years. In the book, 100 years in, Diedrie is has been doing them around once every ten years and is suffering seriously diminishing returns such that it's more like a year at this point.

Edit: Bolded section confirmed.

TRAGEDY!!!

After reading books 1 and 2, I learned they do not have book 3.

I couldn't find it anywhere (online libraries, Demonoid, Audible) except Amazon for fucking $60.

USED! New is $100!

So, I'll probably never know what the hell happens, which is awful because the second book was fantastic.

If anyone has any ideas, lmk.

I dated an English teacher once. She left me because of my improper usage of the colon.

Already checked the local public library system. Nada.

Well, that's the thing. I ran out of dark corners.

The Habsburg Empire. Takes a look how Austria after the War of Austrian Succession tried to centralize her multiethnic/multilingual/multicultural empire. Deals with some of the myths fabricated after Austria was broken up after WW1.
